5 sunglasses trends for summer 2020

Some of you might ask: “Sunglasses trends? Why should I care?” But the answer is: “You should!” Because this summer there won't be a better way to show off your style, fashion sense and personality, than with a pair of assertive sunglasses.

Our trend editors have taken a look at the catwalks, browsed fashion magazines and analysed the eyewear fashion on the streets of our big cities. And this is what they came up with: the 5 hottest sunglasses trends for summer 2020.

Let's see them!

Sunglasses for summer 2020

This summer will be dominated by oversized sunglasses. Whether square, round or more futuristic shapes – the bigger the better!

1. Square and oversized

One trend that you probably won't be able to ignore this summer is that of oversized square lenses and frames. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian are in love with the oversized design of these bold frames, which seem to be made to attract envious looks.

Square oversized sunglasses come in many colours – but the must-haves this season are the rousing and robust colours of the Pantone palette, revealing the desire for energising contrasts and personalised self-expression. Furthermore, deep black and trendy Turtoise patterns are going to be very popular this summer.

2. The new Cat-Eye: Butterfly sunglasses

When you consider the latest sunglasses trends, you will be pleasantly struck by the large, butterfly-like shapes. This 2020 trend will easily overtake your Cat Eye frames, especially if you choose a striking model that flaunts eye-catching details.

In terms of colour, you should aim at the aesthetic tones of the '70s, being careful not to shy away from animal patterns. An important advantage of large butterfly glasses, apart from their outstanding fashion factor, is their anti-aging protection. Thanks to the large lenses, they fully protect the sensitive skin around the eyes.

3. Back in vogue: shield sunglasses

The mono lens is back! The accessory that was made famous by celebrities like J.Lo is back in eyewear fashion. This year's shield sunglasses are more futuristic than ever and everything seems to point towards maxi lenses, in the upcoming seasons. Also minimal frames in Matrix style are very much in vogue. The word on the street is to have fun and play with fashion.

4. From old to new: The '70s in 2020

Retro styles are all the rage this summer. Many iconic colourful shapes are back, but with a modern touch. These include mainly round sunglasses and cat-eye lenses, but also square shapes. This summer we will see less mirrored lenses abut more colour shades and neutral colours that hark back to the 1970s. Turtoise patterns for the frames or blue sunglasses lenses will be essential this summer.

5. Just say one word: geometrical!

Geometric shapes, such as triangles, squares and, above all hexagons will rule the sunglasses trends for summer 2020. The geometric sunglasses that were presented on the catwalks, were either minimalist or generously framed. This trend is bold and not to everyone's taste, but rounded edges could be a nice compromise!
