Metabolism of cornea

Corneal metabolism is dependent on the supply of glucose and water. The main source is the tear film. The usage of contact lenses can lead to hypoxic conditions – see hypoxia and hypercapnia. This can result in a fragile epithelium susceptible to infections. High-quality lenses partially reduce the pressure of oxygen and so do not have a critical effect on the metabolism of the cornea.
